General Diving Questions

When's the best time to come?

Scubafish are open all year round. For further information as to conditions, and seasons please click here

Can I bring my kids on the boat?

Children are welcome upon MV Maya, but we do not recommend MY Scubafish (our speedboat) for young children (due to room constraints). Our boats have shaded areas, and we carry lifejackets for children (although not for infants). Our boat crew are very friendly but will be busy throughout the day so cannot offer a babysitting service. We are however happy to split the day’s diving between parents, or recommend your children snorkel with one of our guides whilst you are diving. On some occasions (according to availability) we can help you to access an experienced babysitter who would be paid independently and can watch your children in your resort or join you on the boat (you would be required to pay their boat space in this instance)

Can I dive at Hin Daeng & Hin Muang?

Hin Daeng & Hin Muang are located approximately 70km south-west from Kantiang Bay in Ko Lanta and diving conditions can be hard to predict. Sometimes visibility can be 40m+ with no currents but at other times currents can be pretty strong and if there is a lot of plankton (good for attracting the larger marine life) the visibility can be reduced.

We strongly recommend making your first dive trip to Ko Haa or Ko Rok, before making more challenging trips out to Hin Daeng & Hin Muang or the other more advanced sites. This gives our guides a chance to see if you will enjoy the dives out at Hin Daeng & Hin Muang.

If you are not an Advanced Diver already, and would like to dive deeper than 18m, you could consider taking a Deep Dive Adventure Dive, which would certify you to dive to 30m without completing the whole Advanced Course at a small additional cost (1,500 THB)

Some people can find Hin Daeng & Hin Muang a little much as a first dive if they haven’t dived for a while or don’t have so much experience with dives that have strong currents. Other factors to consider include the number of dives you have, how comfortable you feel in the water, how recently you last dived etc. It is the unpredictability of the conditions that forms the basis of this advise. (When the currents are really strong, they can be pretty difficult dives – even for very experienced divers).

Our general recommendation is that Open Water Divers have a minimum of 25 dives, and experience in strong current, or take the Deep Adventure Dive with one of our instructors.

How long are your journey times to each of the dive sites?

Our 2 luxury dive boats offer shorter journey times to some of Thailand’s top dive sites. In High Season we depart directly from the beach in Kantiang Bay, in the south of Ko Lanta, saving you hours of valuable holiday time:

  • Ko Haa – 35-45 mins

  • Hin D/M – 1 hr 30-45 mins
  • King Cruiser – 2 hrs – 2 hrs 25 mins

In low season our boats are moored in Lanta Old Town, for protection from the winds. Our journey times throughout these months are:

  • Ko Haa – 1 hr – 1 hr 20 mins
  • Ko Rok – 1 hr 15-30 mins
  • Ko Kradan – 45-50 mins
  • Hin D/M – 1 hr 45 – 2 hrs

  • Multiple Dives: 18 hours

Are we charging the average price for diving on Lanta? Well, do you want an average dive trip? Of course not. You want a great experience, and we believe we offer this. We are not the most expensive dive centre on Ko Lanta. Similarly if our prices were much cheaper than the other dive centers on Ko Lanta, what would you think of our service?

We are a personal dive centre who maintain high standards of customer care and safety. Fuel prices are high around the world – here in Ko Lanta, whilst we are lucky to be placed in the best location for some of the best diving in Thailand and the world, all our dive sites are a minimum of 10km (and up to 70km) away from the island. We calculate our prices very carefully and offer you the lowest possible prices that we can, whilst still maintaining our high standards of safety, customer service, guaranteed small dive groups, comfortable boats and experienced guides and instructors. We also pledge to make trips happen for our customers be adopting a ‘can go, will go’ approach and working together with other operators to make dive trips happen for our customers. Whenever possible, we offer an optional 3rd dive at a reduced price, to enable you to get as much diving in, as cost effectively as possible.

Dive Course Questions

Do you provide Dive Computers on PADI Courses?

Absolutely. Part of your equipment rental included in the course is a Suunto Zoop Dive Computer. You are also then welcome to purchase one of these at a reduced rate!

Do you offer the most up-to-date PADI courses with Computer Learning?

Yes. Scubafish teach the latest, and most up-to-date versions of all PADI courses. This means, for instance, that the Open Water Course includes learning to use a dive computer, the Nitrox Course teaches you to set your percentage and find your maximum operating depth on a dive computer, as well as the Advanced Course Deep Dive making use of this technology also.

Can I get started with my dive course on-line? / Do you offer PADI eLearning?

Yes, and we highly recommend the eLearning options. eLearning allows you to start your training online in most languages, so you can complete all the theory and final exams before you come on holiday saving you valuable holiday time. The on-line courses are valid for 12 months – so you have 1 year in which to complete the course from when you start. The eLearning courses have an additional cost payable directly to PADI, which allows you access to the online knowledge development program for one year, and lifetime access to the PADI Manuals online. It also means that you can spend less time in the classroom and more time on the beach, while you’re on holiday! We then offer you a discounted rate to complete the practical part of the course, here in Ko Lanta. Click here for further information.

What are the medical considerations/requirements for diving?

Diving is considered an extremely safe sport and has a much better track record for injury than many other adventurous sports. However, there are known health risks associated with diving, particularly if you suffer from certain respiratory or circulatory conditions. If you do, it does not necessarily mean that you cannot dive, but you will need to see a doctor to ensure diving poses no risk to your health. Please ensure you check out the PADI Medical Statement before enrolling.

Can kids learn to dive? / What's the youngest age my kids can dive?

Kids can learn to dive from as young as 8 years old, and are often braver than their parents when it comes to taking the plunge! Scubafish staff are comfortable, skilled and experienced in teaching children, and we stock smaller equipment designed specifically for our smallest divers! Click here to see the choices for children.
