PADI AWARE Fish ID Specialty Course


Learn about identifying fish through their family, through physiological differences and find out more about the biodiversity of our marine area and habitats with the PADI AWARE Fish ID Specialty Course!


The 1 day PADI AWARE Fish ID Specialty Course is designed to familiarize divers with fish identification basics for the most common families and species throughout the world, and involve people personally in the conservation of marine ecosystems.

Day 1

08:00 – 3:30pm

You’ll complete 2 Fish ID dives, identifying fish by placing them in appropriate family groups, draw diagrams and describe characteristics of unfamiliar fish, then attempt to identifying specific species when possible. You’ll also complete a Fish Survey recording abundance and habitat information when possible.

  • In Good HealthNot suffering from a cold or ear infection, and meet PADI Course Health Requirements.

How often do courses run?

Courses start every day, at around 08.00. You can book now, or come in to see see us while you’re on holiday in Ko Lanta. We offer free transfers to and from your resort in Ko Lanta for any of our dive courses or daily dive trips.

Are there Additional Charges?

Please note that during High Season (November – May) everyone is required to pay 600 THB per day National Marine Park Fee when out at the Lanta Dive sites.

Since this is a seasonal charge, this is not included in the course price.

There may be a fuel surcharge to visit some of the further away dive sites if you choose to dive these sites during your course.

  • King Cruiser Wreck (+ Shark Point & Anemone Reef): + 1,200 THB [Friday]
  • Hin Daeng & Hin Muang: + 1,000 THB [Monday, Wednesday, Saturday]

What will I learn in the PADI AWARE Fish ID Specialty Course?

This 1 day course consists of two main areas which include academic training, self-study sessions, and 2 Fish ID dives:

 

Self Study: You’ll learn about fish family groupings and common characteristics of fish species found in the local area as well as fish surveying techniques.

PADI courses are designed to help you learn in the way that’s best for you. Courses combine visual, reading, writing and practical learning techniques to ensure you really understand each section.

During 2 Fish ID Dives you’ll identify fish by placing them in appropriate family groups, draw diagrams and describe characteristics of unfamiliar fish, then attempt to identify specific species when possible. Perform a fish survey, including abundance and habitat information when possible.

PADI Course Health Requirements

You must complete and sign the PADI Medical Statement, which includes a medical-history section, to enrol in PADI scuba training programs. A positive response to a question does not necessarily disqualify you from diving but indicates a pre-existing condition that may affect your safety while diving. Your doctor would be required to complete the PADI Medical Statement & Guidelines for Recreational Scuba Diver’s Physical Examination on your behalf in this instance.
